GIMME FIVE: SAT, 1/16/21

(photo: both of my little dudes have been getting pretty dang good with Procreate on the iPad, and this is the latest gem that the 16-year-old cooked up + was hyped to share with me as soon as I landed at his house today)

Alright, let’s keep this train rolling! Today was a wonderful day…got to hang with mmy cubs for my 16-year-old Jeremiah’s birthday (small upside of Cil and I both having these Covid antibodies + my nephews being in full quarantine since the very beginning), got roasted for having the worst puns (even though I could see in their faces how badly they wanted to laugh at the gems I was throwing down), and got to eat Stuffed Crust Pizza + that Hershey’s Cookie Pie from Pizza Hut with the kids (the birthday boy and Cil didn’t even let me lay hands on the Cinnabon Mini Rolls…but whatever).

Today was a great one.

As I get ready to hit the hay, here are my fives for the day:

  1. STUFFED CRUST PIZZA (BUT THAT NEW GARLIC HERB DUSTING THEY PUT ON THE CRUST IS WACK…NEXT TIME WE GO PLAIN FOR SURE)
  2. THIS GAME MY 9-YEAR-OLD NEPHEW AND I PLAY WHERE I CHANGE THE LYRICS TO A SONG AND INSERT LYRICS ABOUT HIS FARTING OR SMELLING OR SOMETHING AND THEN HE TAKES A TURN FOR THE NEXT VERSE AND COMES UP WITH AN EQUALLY SKILLFUL ROAST THAT MAKES ME SMILE AT HIS WIT AND COMEDIC TIMING
  3. FINALLY UPGRADED TO BIG SUR ON MY 2015 MACBOOK AIR LAST NIGHT AND TODAY I FEEL LIKE IT’S BROUGHT MY LAPTOP BACK TO LIFE + MADE IT MORE ZIPPY
  4. 2 NEW EPISODES OF “THIS IS US” THAT WE FORGOT TO WATCH. THIS WRITING IS FLAWLESS, MAN. I’VE NEVER SEEN A SHOW THAT MAKES ME SO CONSISTENTLY FEEL THE BROAD RANGE OF EMOTIONS THAT THIS SHOW DOES, AND I ALWAYS END THESE EPISODES SO APPRECIATIVE OF ALL THE LITTLE DETAILS—THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE JOY, THE STRUGGLE, THE HOPE—THAT MAKE LIFE SUCH AN ENJOYABLE ADVENTURE.
  5. THE PEACE THAT COMES FROM NEATLY WRITING NOTES IN A GOOD QUALITY NOTEBOOK AND THEN THAT FEELING WHEN LIKE HALF THE NOTEBOOK IS STILL FRESH AND THE OTHER HALF HAS THE WEIGHT OF ALL THE IDEAS, PLANS, AND QUIRKY NOTES THAT I FELT FIT TO PUT ON WAX (OR PAPER, IN THIS CASE)

SONG OF THE DAY: TODD TERJE – “INSPECTOR NORSE”

I love dance music, man.

Let me rewind…more specifically, I love DANCING. Since I was a little dude. Can’t get enough of it. My parents had VHS tapes full of me bussin’ a move at like 3 years old at all kinds of random events (shouts to Rent-a-Center for letting those memories get recorded in the first place via the camcorder that we would borrow for certain important events).

I mean it’s so bad that when Cil and I would go out to the club and she would get tired after like 3 hours on the dancefloor I’d be getting mad at her like “BABES WHY DIDN’T YOU WEAR YOUR FRESH SNEAKERS, MAN?! THEN YOUR FEET WOULDN’T BE TIRED!” at which point she’d roll her eyes and go grab a mojito and a seat with one of her girlfriends.

I don’t know what all that has to do with this song, but I guess if we were in non-Covid times and this came on in the club I’d be losing my shit dancing around like I was floating in outer space and Cil would be on Facebook changing her relationship status to “IT’S COMPLICATED”.

We may not be in the club, but if you’ve got at least 4 feet of space around you then I suggest you put this on your good speakers and get to movin’!!

GIMME FIVE: FRI, 1/15/21

I just spent a deeply life-affirming hour on my favorite blog and upon exiting Jason Kottke’s site I had an idea:

WHAT IF EVERY DAY I DOCUMENTED THE FIVE THINGS THAT MADE ME THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE…EVEN IF A COUPLE OF THOSE FIVE THINGS MAY HAVE SEEMED ON THE SURFACE LIKE THEY SUCKED?

I’ve always loved the idea of “The Fives”.

Also, even though none of you would ever be able to trace the thread all the way back, I first fell in love with the idea of a Top 5 from the Crailtap skate blog where some of my favorite skaters would give their Top 5 on the most random bouquet of topics.

Okay, so now that we’ve quoted our sources, let’s fast forward to the years that I hosted Soundwaves Radio where Top 5 list videos for our YouTube channel were one of our staples and one of the funnest way to have listeners feel more connected to these folk that were friends of mine and now friends of theirs.

Then I did a “Gimme 5!” interview with my brother Sake Uno that I enjoyed the heck out of but then Covid hit in full swing and people that were working on their Gimme 5 segments were like:

Aye bruh, this year is pretty fucked….can we revisit this another time?

– The Homies (in different variations, but all pretty much sharing the same sentiment which I had to agree with)

So here we are…at the start of 2021, I beat the motherfucking Rona with my Pokemon bride Cecilia, and I just feel so much more appreciative for all the quirky little corners of life, man.

The crust of a pizza.

French fry crumbs.

Those little almonds covered in chocolate from Trader Joe’s.

I realize that I’ve only named food items so far, but fuck it, man….when I had the Rona, I didn’t want to even see any food besides the wonderful soups that Cil’s sister Jasmine and her momma Jesse blessed us with. But now that we’re doing way better (got the Rona from an irresponsible co-worker on 12/7, terrible symptoms 12/10 – 12/24, woke up on 1/1 for the first time with zero cough) I just want to eat it up.

Life. Food. Music. Sunsets that I used to take for granted.

And whenever we’re able to touch hands again, I’m dapping EVERYONE the fuck up.

Full-on hugs. Homie hugs. Kid-and-Play dance hugs. All that shit.

But for now, I’ll rock with long-distance high fives. Because you can hit a distance high-five from like as close as 6 feet but even as far as like 100 feet.

So I’ll get it started here…put your hand up, and let me give you five…in no particular order, here are the five things I’m most grateful for today:

  1. FRESH CHICKEN McNUGGETS
  2. MY SAUCEMOTO DIP CUPS THAT JUST ARRIVED FROM AMAZON THAT I’M LOOKING TO INAUGURATE WITH SAID NUGGETS SOMETIME TOMORROW
  3. THE SMILE THAT MY NIECE BELLA GIVES ME WHEN I GET HER TO LAUGH ON FACETIME SINCE SHE’S ALWAYS PLAYING LIKE MY COMEDY SUCKS
  4. MY BROTHER SAKE UNO AND OUR DAILY EXCHANGES VIA IG MESSENGER + TEXT WHERE HE MAKES ME CHOKE ON WATER OR A RICOLA AT LEAST ONCE A DAY FROM LAUGHING
  5. MY LITTLE BROTHER JAKE DECIDING TO GET HIS HUSTLE ON AND STARTING AN ONLINE BUSINESS AND THEN HIM TEXTING ME TONIGHT ON A FRIDAY “NIGHT ONE OF THE BUSINESS” (SO DAMN PROUD OF THIS DUDE)

Okay, man, well there it is.

A new segment just like that. And don’t hesitate to gimme YOUR five in the comments…shit, this IS meant to be a two-way conversation after all!

Much love, and I’ll see y’all tomorrow. :]

FULL-FIGURED GENTLEMAN, OPEN TO ACCIDENTALLY GETTING HIT ON

(photo: Uncle Richard)

Cecilia and I were chilling watching comedy on YouTube just now and came across this hilarious story from comedian Barry Brewer about how he unknowingly went on a date with a dude that he met while playing basketball.

The best part of watching this was that Cil was CRACKING UP because she’s firsthand seen me get picked up by dudes and watched me unknowingly give the wrong impression because I’m just a generally nice dude, I’m always down to make new friends, and I’ll get way deep into a conversation with a dude before I realize that we are on two completely different pages of the same book when it come to our intentions.

Then there are the times where we’ve been out at an event or a festival, she’ll see a dude hollering at me, and then she’ll hilariously fade away to let mans spit game at me while I ever-so-politely keep the conversation going…all the while trying to not be rude by saying “sorry, man, I’m married” and trying to avoid explaining that said marriage involves a comedian of a woman who’s currently standing 15 feet away rooting for this guy to close the sale.

These are the difficulties that come with being a full-figured gentleman with ambiguously multi-ethnic good looks. And the struggles of having a wife that is always up for laughs while having no problem putting her honey out in a forest full of bears.

But it’s all good.

I’m beyond comfortable with my sexuality, man. And I happily embrace whatever may come with this life of looking like a full-figured Richard Grieco.

Even if it means giving accidentally giving nice dudes with good taste the wrong idea and inadvertently wasting their time.

SONG OF THE DAY: THE REVOLUTIONARIES – “KUNTA KINTE DUB”

  1. “Small Axe – Lovers Rock”is one of the most masterful hours of storytelling I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen someone so masterfully capture the feeling of a club night and all the emotions that get shared and worked through as a bunch of bodies become one mass—vibing, celebrating, falling in love, working through the pains of life…ALL OF IT. Anyways Steve McQueen just became my new favorite director with this, you can peep it on Amazon Prime, and I hope it strikes you the way it struck me.
  2. This song occurs at one point in this film—it’s my favorite scene which should tell you a lot—and I’ve had this song on repeat for the last 24 hours. So yeah. It’s a BURNER.

In the words of Yasiin Bey:

Enough talk…now let’s move…

FEELIN GOOD, FEELIN SK8: ISHOD WAIR

(photo: Young Abraheezee professing his love at a young age for both skateboarding and Quik—the beverage AND the One Man Band)

I love skateboarding, man.

Like LOVE love.

Ever since my older cousin Otto showed me a dub of Blind’s Video Days on the front TV of our abuelita’s crib, I’ve remained deeply in love with both skateboarding and any and all things made by Spike Jonze.

Anyways, FEELIN GOOD, FEELIN SK8 is a new series where I’ll share with you clips that I find fresh from the world of skateboarding. And for today’s inaugural entry we have one of the hardest clips of all-time from Ishod Wair and his part from the Nike SB Chronicles Volume 2.

Also for the uninitiated, you gotta know that skate videos always have the illest music from all corners of the sound spectrum. Shit, I think like 40% of the dope music that resides in my mental archives has come from skate videos or skate YouTube. And this song “Politicians In My Eyes” sent me down a rabbit hole where I learned about DEATH—a band from Detroit that consisted of three musician brothers—and their history as being the band that basically birthed the punk sound without the world ever knowing nor giving them their credit mainly because the labels wanted them to change their name but eldest brother told the labels 🖕 and was willing to watch their future chances vanish in the name of sticking to their guns.

FUCK YEAH, DUDE. THAT’S ABOUT AS PUNK AS IT GETS.

Okay, enough talking…here is Ishod ripping, and I’ve got the DEATH joint right below for you because I’m a nice guy.

OH SHIT I EVEN FOUND A LINK TO THE FULL DOC! I GUESS TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY…AND DON’T SAY I DON’T TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOU!!
